TryHarder Barcode / QR Code Reader

Take a photo with your phone or upload an image of the barcode/QR — even if it is faded, scratched or hard to read. TryHarder runs many recovery passes before giving up.

How to scan

Take a photo or upload images of the same barcode/QR from different angles. TryHarder scans each shot, then combines what it can make out. More angles = better chance on damaged codes.

Who this is for

Warehouse operators, retail staff, event hosts and anyone stuck with a scratched, faded or low-contrast label. If you need industrial machine-vision certification, use specialised hardware — this page is a free browser best-effort tool.

How to use TryHarder

  1. Take a photo or upload image(s) of the barcode/QR.
  2. If the image has several codes, drag a box around the one you want.
  3. If it fails, add more photos/angles — TryHarder merges them and shows partial recovery.
  4. Torn label? Photograph both pieces — together in one shot, or one piece per photo. For EAN-13, UPC-A and EAN-8 the halves are matched up by position and the missing digits filled in, even when neither piece scans on its own.
  5. Keep the printed number in shot. The digits under the bars are read as well, and often survive damage the bars do not. They are only used where they agree with the bars or where the check digit confirms them, so a misread never overrides what the bars actually say.
  6. Review combined candidates and the “what we could make out” summary.
  7. Copy the best result, or open it if it is a URL.

How recovery works

  1. Load a camera frame or uploaded image.
  2. Run many variants: grayscale, contrast boost, thresholds, invert, upscale, small rotations.
  3. Decode each with ZXing multi-format + TRY_HARDER (and the browser BarcodeDetector when available).
  4. Rank results by how many independent passes agree.

Worked examples

Example 1. Faded shelf QR: take a phone photo, keep TryHarder deep recovery on.

Example 2. Scratched Code 128: crop tightly around the bars, try again.

Example 3. Live camera: hold steady until the green border flashes and the text appears.

Common mistakes

Photographing the whole carton when only the label matters. The more of the frame the code occupies, the more pixels there are per bar, and detail is what recovery works with — move closer or use the selection box to scan just the code. Fighting a reflection is the second: a glossy or laminated label under a direct light throws a highlight across the bars that no processing recovers, so change the angle rather than the settings. The third is giving up after one pass, when re-scanning a tighter selection of the same photo often reads a code the full frame could not.

Tips

Hold the camera square to the label rather than at an angle, and let it focus before capturing — a sharp photo of a damaged code beats a blurry photo of a clean one. If a label is torn or scuffed, include the quiet zone either side of the code in the selection, since the blank margin is part of what a reader uses to find the code at all. On a phone, natural indirect light gives better results than the flash, which tends to blow out exactly the area you need.

Accessibility notes

Images can be uploaded instead of captured, so a working camera is not required and photos taken by someone else work equally well. Decoded values are shown as selectable text that can be read aloud and copied, rather than only being displayed over the image. All controls are standard buttons reachable by keyboard, though aiming a live camera at a label is inherently a visual task.
