Who this is for

Anyone whose photo is too big for where it needs to go: an attachment bouncing off a mail size limit, images making a web page slow, a form that refuses anything over two megabytes, or a batch of phone photos heading into a document. Modern phone cameras produce files far larger than most uses need, and most of that size can go without any visible difference.

How to use Image Compressor

  1. Add one or more images from your device — the preview appears under the drop zone.
  2. Click the original or compressed preview to open a full-size view (Esc or click outside to close).
  3. On the original preview, click Crop, drag a rectangle, then Apply crop — compression uses the cropped image.
  4. Drag the Quality and Resolution bars below the preview; size and look update live.
  5. Use JPEG or WebP to shrink photos (Quality does not apply to PNG — it is lossless).
  6. In a batch, click any file in the list to preview that one; all files still use the same settings when you download.
  7. Watch the progress bar on large batches, then use Download all (each file) or Download ZIP (one archive).

Worked examples

Example 1. Phone photo for email: resolution around 50–70%, quality 0.7–0.8 as JPG or WebP.

Example 2. UI screenshot: stay on PNG if you need sharp flat colours and transparency; keep resolution at 100%.

Choosing a format

Photos usually shrink best as JPG or WebP. Graphics with few colours and hard edges often look better as PNG. Transparency is lost if you convert a transparent PNG to JPG.

Choosing a format

JPEG suits photographs and is understood by everything ever written, but it cannot store transparency and it softens hard edges — text and screenshots look noticeably worse in it. PNG is lossless, keeps transparency and is the right choice for screenshots, logos and line art, at the cost of much larger files for photographs.

WebP generally beats both: meaningfully smaller than JPEG at comparable quality, with transparency support like PNG. It is the sensible default for the web today. The one reason to avoid it is a destination you do not control — some older software and a few print workflows still expect a JPEG, and a file nobody can open is not a saving.

Common mistakes

Compressing the only copy you have. Compression is lossy and cannot be undone — keep the originals until you have looked at the results at full size. Re-compressing an already-compressed image is the same mistake repeated, and each pass costs quality while saving progressively less. The third is compressing when the real problem is dimensions: a 4000-pixel-wide photo displayed at 800 pixels is wasting most of its data no matter how hard it is compressed, and setting a max width saves far more.

Tips

Set a sensible max width first and compress second — for most web and email use, 1200 to 1600 pixels wide is plenty, and that single change usually saves more than any quality setting. Choose the output format deliberately: WebP is markedly smaller than JPEG at the same quality and is supported everywhere that matters now, though JPEG remains the safer choice for anything going into old software. Check the result at full size rather than in the thumbnail; compression artefacts hide well when the image is small on screen.

Accessibility notes

File sizes and the saving achieved are reported as text next to each image, so the outcome does not depend on comparing two pictures by eye. All controls are standard buttons, selects and file inputs reachable by keyboard. Bear in mind that compression is judged visually by nature — the numbers tell you how much smaller the file is, but only looking at it tells you whether it still looks right.

Your images are read, resized and re-encoded in the browser. No photo is uploaded, which is why the tool keeps working with the network disconnected and why the originals on your device are never modified — every result is a new file you choose to save.
