Sketch quickly in the browser with brushes and shapes, then export a PNG for notes, mock icons or rough diagrams.

Who this is for

People who need a drawing surface open in five seconds, not a design suite. Typical jobs: annotating a screenshot before pasting it into a ticket, sketching a rough wireframe while you talk through an idea, drawing a quick diagram for a class, or blanking out a name or address on an image before you share it. If you want layers, masks, adjustment curves, CMYK output or a file you can reopen and keep editing, use a dedicated editor — Paint exports a flat PNG and keeps nothing.

How to use Paint

  1. The canvas opens at 900 × 560 pixels. To work at a different size, press New and enter a width and height — anything from 50 to 3000 pixels each way.
  2. Choose a tool: Pencil, Brush, Line, Rectangle, Ellipse, Fill bucket, Text, Eraser or Colour picker.
  3. Set the colour swatch and the size box (size drives brush width, and the font size for the Text tool).
  4. For Rectangle and Ellipse, switch Fill on for a solid shape or off for an outline.
  5. Draw. Ctrl+Z undoes, Ctrl+Y or Ctrl+Shift+Z redoes.
  6. Press Save (or Ctrl+S) to download toolsare-paint.png.

Worked examples

Example 1 — redacting a screenshot. Press Open and select the screenshot; the canvas resizes to the image's own dimensions. Choose Rectangle, turn Fill on, set the colour to black, and drag a box over the account number. Save. Because the export is a flattened PNG, the pixels underneath are genuinely gone from the downloaded file — not hidden under a layer that someone could move.

Example 2 — labelling a diagram. Draw your boxes with Rectangle (Fill off), join them with Line, then switch to the Text tool, set the size box to about 20, and click where the label should start. Type, then click away to commit it. Text is painted straight onto the canvas, so once you have clicked away the only way to change it is Undo.

Example 3 — a quick icon. Press New and enter 512 × 512. Block in the background with the Fill bucket, draw the shape with Brush at a large size, then tidy the edges with the Eraser. Save gives you a 512 × 512 PNG on a white background.

What this is not

Paint has no layers, no selection or transform tool, no gradients and no filters. There is no project file — you cannot save work half-finished and reopen it later, because the only output is a flat PNG. Anything that needs print-ready colour, vector output or repeated editing belongs in a dedicated design tool.

Common mistakes

Reloading the tab. Nothing is saved anywhere until you press Save. A refresh, a crash or a closed tab loses the drawing outright.

Pressing New to clear the canvas. New rebuilds the canvas at a size you type and wipes the undo history with it. If you only want a blank surface at the same size, press Clear instead.

Expecting the eraser to punch a hole. On screen the Eraser reveals the page behind it, so it looks like transparency. The exported PNG is flattened onto white first, so erased areas come out white, not clear.

Opening a photo straight off a phone. Open resizes the canvas to the image's real dimensions, so a 12-megapixel photo becomes a canvas of about 4000 × 3000 — above the 3000-pixel limit you can type by hand, and heavy enough that undo will struggle.

Before you start

Decide the output size first. Open sets the canvas from the image you load, and New lets you type any size from 50 to 3000 pixels, but neither can be changed later without starting again — there is no resize or crop after the fact. If you are annotating an existing image, load it first and draw second. If you are drawing from scratch for a specific slot, type those dimensions into New before you make a single mark.

Tips

The size box does double duty: it sets brush and line width, and it sets the font size for the Text tool. Bump it to 18–24 before typing a label or the text will be too small to read.

The Colour picker samples a colour from the canvas, which is the quickest way to match a shade you have already used or one from an image you opened.

The Fill bucket matches nearby colours within a small tolerance rather than only exact matches, so it copes with the soft edges of a brush stroke. On a photograph it will still leak, because photographic gradients are wider than that tolerance.

Hold your shapes to single drags — Rectangle, Ellipse and Line all commit when you release the mouse, and only Undo will take them back.

Accessibility notes

Undo, redo and save have keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl+Z, Ctrl+Y or Ctrl+Shift+Z, and Ctrl+S), and the toolbar is standard HTML buttons with titles, so a screen reader will announce each tool by name.

Drawing itself is unavoidably a pointer task — it needs a mouse, trackpad, stylus or finger, and there is no keyboard-driven way to place a stroke. That is a genuine limitation of the tool rather than something you can configure around. Dark mode is available from the theme toggle and affects the interface only; the canvas always exports on white.

Limitations (honest)

Privacy

Paint runs entirely in your browser. The canvas is a standard HTML element drawn by JavaScript on your own device, and images you load with Open are read locally — nothing you draw or open is uploaded to our server, because the tool has no upload endpoint to send it to. Save writes the PNG straight to your downloads folder.

That means a screenshot you redact here never leaves your machine, which is the main reason to use a browser canvas rather than an online editor for anything sensitive. It also means we cannot recover your work if you close the tab — there is no copy on our side.

Advertising cookies and your choices about them are described in our Privacy Policy and the consent notice shown on your first visit.

The PNG you save here is often not the last step. If the file is larger than you need — and a 3000-pixel canvas will be — run it through the Image Compressor before attaching it to an email or uploading it. To place a finished sketch into a document alongside other pages, the PDF tools will combine images and PDFs into one file. If you are matching a brand colour before you start drawing, the Colour Picker converts between hex, RGB and HSL so you can paste the right hex into the swatch. The full set is on the home page.

FAQ

Can I export a PNG with a transparent background?

No. The Save button flattens the canvas onto a white background before it writes the file, so erased areas export as white rather than clear. The Eraser looks transparent while you work because it removes pixels from the live canvas, but that transparency is not carried into the download.

Can I reopen a drawing and keep editing it?

Not as a project. There is no save-in-progress format — the only output is a flat PNG. You can load that PNG back in with Open and draw on top of it, but the earlier strokes are baked into the image and cannot be separated again.

What size can the canvas be?

It opens at 900 × 560 pixels. Press New to type any width and height between 50 and 3000 pixels. If you load an image with Open, the canvas takes that image's own dimensions instead, which can exceed 3000 pixels — a phone photo often will.

Does my drawing get uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser on your own device, and the tool has no upload endpoint. That also means we hold no copy, so a closed tab loses unsaved work permanently.

Does it work with a stylus, and is it pressure-sensitive?

A stylus works as an ordinary pointer, so you can draw with an Apple Pencil or an S Pen. Pressure is not read — line width comes from the size box only, so pressing harder does not thicken the stroke.

Why did the fill bucket flood the whole image?

The fill spreads across neighbouring pixels whose colour is within a narrow tolerance of the one you clicked. That works cleanly on flat areas and solid shapes. On a photograph, colours shade gradually into one another, so the fill finds a continuous path and keeps going. Enclose the region with a drawn line first, or use a filled Rectangle instead.

Does it work offline?

Once the page has loaded, drawing, undo and Save all run without the network. The page itself has to be fetched first, and it is not installable as an offline app.
