CheckOff

CheckOff turns an Excel paste into a live pick/pack checklist: search as you go, tick items off, and track remaining quantities until nothing is left.

Who this is for

Anyone working through a list of physical things and needing to know what is left: picking an order against a pick slip, packing a shipment, checking a delivery against its docket, or running a stocktake of a shelf. The list usually starts life in Excel or as an SAP export, and the gap this fills is the awkward one between printing it on paper and having a scanner-driven system do it for you.

How to use CheckOff

1. In Excel or SAP, copy names/products (and optional quantities / Menge).
2. Paste into CheckOff and press Load list.
3. Type in the search box to jump to an item (or scan a barcode into the search field if your scanner types text).
4. For quantity 5, press Found 1 each time you find one unit until 0 left.
5. Repeat until the progress bar is full.

Worked examples

Example 1. Packing list: Product | Qty — check units as you bag them.

Example 2. Guest list: one name per line — tick when they arrive.

Example 3. Stock count: SKU and expected qty — +1 each time you locate a unit.

Working with quantities

A pick list is rarely one of each. Where your pasted list includes a quantity, it is tracked separately from the line itself, so an item is not finished until its full count is accounted for — which is the difference between ticking off a line and actually having picked eight of them. The remaining count is what tells you whether the job is done, and it is worth watching rather than the number of ticked rows.

That also makes partial picks visible instead of hidden. A line with three of eight taken reads as outstanding rather than as complete, so the shortfall surfaces while you are still standing in front of the shelf rather than after the truck has gone.

Common mistakes

Reloading the page mid-count. Progress is kept in this browser, so a refresh or a switch to another device starts you over — finish a list in the tab you began it in. Pasting a report with its headings and totals is the second; stray rows become list items and inflate what you appear to have left, so paste the data rows and nothing else. The third is using Load list when you meant Add to current list, which replaces the job you were part-way through instead of extending it.

Tips

Search rather than scroll — typing part of a code and using Check first match is far quicker than hunting a long list on a small screen, and it is the whole point of having this on a device rather than on paper. Use Copy remaining at the end to hand over exactly what is outstanding, rather than describing it. Try the sample list first if you are showing someone else how it works, so you are not experimenting on a live pick.

Accessibility notes

Items are ordinary list rows with text labels and standard checkboxes, so the list can be worked through by keyboard and read by a screen reader. Status is carried in the text and in the counts rather than by colour alone, so a ticked item is identifiable without distinguishing shades. The search field takes plain text and filters as you type, which suits a device where scrolling is awkward.

Limitations (honest)

• Not a multi-user shared list (progress is this browser only unless you copy remaining items).
• Does not connect to Excel Online or ERP systems.
• Requires JavaScript in a modern browser.
